Emergency Landing in Charlestonafter after hole in fuselage

(CNN) -- A Southwest Airlines jet made an emergency landing in Charleston, West Virginia, on Monday after a football-sized hole in its fuselage caused the cabin to depressurize, an airline spokeswoman said.
Southwest Flight 2294 made an emergency landing at Yeager Airport in Charleston, West spokeswoman Marilee McInnis told CNN.

The sudden drop in cabin pressure caused the jet's oxygen masks to deploy.

Southwest Flight 2294 was en route from Nashville, Tennessee, to Baltimore, Maryland, with 126 passengers and a crew of five aboard, McInnis said.

It landed at 5:10 p.m. after the crew reported a football-sized hole in the middle of the cabin near the top of the aircraft, McInnis said.

What caused the damage to the jet had not been determined, she said. Both the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the incident, FAA spokeswoman Holly Baker said.

In a statement issued Monday night, Southwest said "There is no responsible way to speculate as to a cause at this point."

"We have safety procedures in place, and they were followed in this instance to get all passengers and crew safely on the ground," the airline said. "Reports we have are that our passengers were calm and that our pilots and flight attendants did a great job getting the aircraft on the ground safely."

Southwest dispatched a replacement aircraft to take passengers on to Baltimore. See map of flight path »

Charleston airport spokesman Brian Belcher said a local pizzeria provided food for the passengers as they waited.

The damaged jet will remain on the ground there until federal inspectors can examine it, he said.

In addition, all 181 of Southwest's 737-300s -- about a third of the airline's fleet -- will be inspected overnight after the emergency landing, McInnis said. Southwest does not expect the inspections to create delays, she said.

QANTAS A380:Emergency at Heathrow Airport

A QANTAS Airbus A380 becomes involved in an emergency situation when a problem with the front landing gear is discovered.

The plane aborts its first landing attempt, performs a go-around and then lands safely on runway 27L at Heathrow Airport. There were no reported injuries.

The 135 passengers on board had no idea the strike even happened, American Airlines spokesman Ned Raynolds said.

"The passengers came off the plane and after coming inside the terminal, only then did they learn about the fact that there was a bird strike," he said.

"The only damage was to the hydraulic system of the landing gear," Raynolds added, saying the plane will be in service soon after it is repaired.

There were also five crew members on board, but Raynolds would not say how much experience they have. Investigators are inspecting the plane now.

The run-in renewed fears about planes dangerously colliding with birds that live near the airport. This is the first recorded bird strike since a flock of Canada geese rammed into Flight 1549 in January, forcing Capt. Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger to ditch the plane in the Hudson River in a miracle landing.

The captain reported problems with the nose gear after the landing. FAA officials said the plane had to be towed to the ramp, while Port Authority and American Airlines officials said it got there under its own power.

The plane was 900 feet in the air when it ran into the birds, the FAA said.

It's uncertain what type of birds hit the plane, though sources said it was likely some type of gull. Those birds are statistically most likely to hit planes at this time of year at LaGuardia, federal data shows.

Canada geese are molting at this time of year and are generally grounded. Since 2000, there's been only one Canada goose strike at LaGuardia in June and July.

The Boeing 737-800 departed Miami at 8:14 a.m. and landed at 10:54 a.m.

Federal and Port Authority officials have recently rounded up hundreds of Canada geese near LaGuardia and gassing them to death to prevent another near-Catastrophe like the one in January.

Yemenia Airlines Flight IY626 Airbus A310-300 Plane Crash In Indian Ocean

A Yemenia Airlines Airbus A310-300 jet carrying 153 people crashed in the Indian Ocean 12 miles from the airport on Tuesday June, 29, 2009 as it came in for a landing on the island nation of Comoros.
A 14-year-old girl was found alive in the sea, Comoros Communications Minister Abdourahim Said Bakar said. Earlier reports had said the rescued child was five.
The Paris airports authority said 66 French nationals were aboard the plane, which was flying the final leg of a trip from Paris and Marseille to Comoros via Yemen.
A Yemeni aviation official said there were also nationals from Canada, Comoros, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Morocco, the Palestinian territories, the Philippines and Yemen on the plane.
It is the second Airbus to plunge into the sea this month. An Air France Airbus A330-200 crashed into the Atlantic Ocean killing 228 people on board on June 1. A preliminary report on that crash is due on Thursday.
The Paris-Marseille-Yemen leg of the Yemenia flight was flown by an Airbus A330. In Sanaa, those passengers who were flying on to the Comoros changed onto a second Yemenia plane, the A310 that crashed.

FAULTS DETECTED
French Transport Minister Dominique Bussereau said faults had been detected during inspections in France in 2007 on the Yemenia A310, and that it had not flown to France since.
"The A310 in question was inspected in 2007 by the DGAC (French transport authorities) and they noticed a certain number of faults," he told the I-tele television channel.
"The company was not on the black list but was subject to stricter checks on our part, and was due to be interviewed shortly by the European Union's safety committee."
"The question we are asking ... is whether you can collect people in a normal way on French territory and then put them in a plane that does not ensure their security. We do not want this to happen again," he said.
Yemen's transport minister said the plane was thoroughly checked in May under Airbus supervision.
"It was a comprehensive inspection carried out in Yemen ... with experts from Airbus," Khaled Ibrahim al-Wazeer told Reuters from Sanaa. "It was in line with international standards."
The EU suspended permission for Yemenia to maintain EU-registered planes in February after it failed a set of audit inspections, the EU's aviation safety agency told Reuters in Brussels.
The move would not have affected the doomed Airbus A310 plane since it was registered in Yemen. But it provides further evidence of European concerns over the airline's operations after the EU Commission said the plane which crashed had sparked an EU inquiry two years ago.
The EU's Transport Commissioner Antonio Tajani said it would contact Yemenia and planned to propose a global blacklist of airlines deemed unsafe.
Yemenia is 51 percent owned by Yemen and 49 percent by Saudi Arabia. Its fleet includes two Airbus 330-200s, four Airbus 310-300s and four Boeing 737-800s, according to its website.
French television showed pictures of friends and relatives of the passengers weeping at Paris's Charles de Gaulle airport, many of them railing at the airline.
Families arriving at the airport in Marseille, where there is a large Comoran community, were met by Comoros consul Stephane Salord.
"The Comorans save up for several months in the year to go to Comoros with their families. In this plane there were entire families, parents, children, elders who were with them."

AIRBUS INVESTIGATORS
Ibrahim Abdourazak, an official at a crisis center in Comoros, told Reuters the 14-year-old girl was from a village in the center of the Indian Ocean archipelago.
Earlier, a doctor in the Comoros had told Reuters a five-year old child had been plucked alive from the sea and taken to a medical center.
Airbus said it was dispatching a team of investigators to the Comoros. It said the aircraft was built in 1990 and had been used by Yemenia since 1999. Its engines were built by Pratt and Whitney, a unit of United Technologies.
A Yemenia official said there were 142 passengers including three infants, and 11 crew. The plane was flying to Moroni, capital of Grande Comore, the main island of the archipelago.
"The weather conditions were rough; strong wind and high seas. The wind speed recorded on land at the airport was 61 kph (38 mph). There could be other factors," Mohammad al-Sumairi, deputy general manager for Yemenia operations, told Reuters.
The French military sent army and civilian medical teams, boats and divers to the crash site aboard the plane from the Indian Ocean island of Reunion. Comoros authorities sent small speedboats.
France and the Comoros have enjoyed close ties since the islands' independence in 1975. France estimates 200,000 people from Comoros live in mainland France, and remittances from France are an important part of the islands' economy.
For a map showing the flight path of the airliner, go to:
http:/graphics.thomsonreuters.com/RNGS/J UN/CRASH.jpg

US Airways Boeing 737 plane lands safely despite tire blowout

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 270px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_hORHP1CwmnU/SkgudVgCQHI/AAAAAAAACy4/N8P3oNGHvJk/s400/lgplane.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5352579238652428402" />
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 270px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_hORHP1CwmnU/SkgudIF-5JI/AAAAAAAACyw/AzFH36LpOFY/s400/lgplane2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5352579235053495442" />
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 270px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_hORHP1CwmnU/SkgucxFh9lI/AAAAAAAACyo/nWrz8zrr6iA/s400/lgplanemishap.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5352579228877583954" />
A US Airways Flight 1241, a Boeing 737 plane landed safely at Tampa International Airport despite having a tire blowout Saturday afternoon on June 27, 2009. It appears the nose wheel tires blew as it landed, forcing the airport to shut down the busy north-south runway. US Airways Flight 1241 was arriving from Philadelphia on TIA's western runway about 2:45 p.m.

When the B737 plane touched down and it was starting to slow down when all of a sudden it lifted up in the air and slammed back down to the ground," said Al Pietrowski. "Everything fell down from the ceiling."

The runway was closed until the plane could be towed. A parallel runway was used in the meantime. The incident did not affect other flights at the airport.

All the passengers onboard were taken by bus off the runway to a secure area. No injuries were reported. But on June 28, Billy Mays was found unresponsive by his wife Sunday morning. A fire rescue crew pronounced him dead at 7:45 a.m. It was not immediately clear how he died. He said he was hit on the head when the US Airways made a rough landing Saturday, and Mays' wife told investigators the TV personality didn't feel well before he went to bed that night.

U.S. Airways confirmed Sunday on June 28, 2009 that Mays was among the passengers on a flight that made a rough landing on Saturday afternoon at Tampa International Airport, leaving debris on the runway after apparently blowing its front tires."

"All of a sudden as we hit you know it was just the hardest hit, all the things from the ceiling started dropping," MyFox Tampa Bay quoted him as saying. "It hit me on the head, but I got a hard head."

Close Call on Boston Airport Runway

June 19, 2009 a construction vehicle drove onto Runway 15R at Logan International Airport as a US Airways A320 jet was taking off, missing a collision with the jet mere two seconds in what FAA terms "a very serious incident."

The truck driver, who worked for HNTB Inc., is suspended from driving anywhere on the airport grounds.

Can you imagine what could happen in two seconds? Here’s the latest information about the recovery of the bodies, aircraft, and the mystery that surrounds the disaster.

Evidence Recovered

So far, 50 bodies have been recovered. There are still 178 bodies that are missing. The names of the recovered have not been released.
Roughly 400 pieces of debris has been recovered. Among the recovered debris are a large chunk of the stabilizer from the aircraft’s tail, wiring, an airplane seat, a boarding pass, and some personal belongings.

Evidence That Has Not Been Recovered

The flight data recorder and the voice recorder has yet to be recovered. These two items, if recovered, might provide investigators with a lot of information as to why the plane went down.

The Search for The Black Boxes

There is roughly 12 days until the black boxes stop emitting their locator signals. Once the signal is gone, the chances of finding the box will virtually disappear.
There are a number of people and sophisticated equipment being used to try to detect the locator signals from the black boxes. The French nuclear sub, the Emeraude, which is equipped with high-tech sonar equipment, is listening for the signals. Also assisting in the search for the signals is a U.S. Navy underwater listening device that can detect the pinging sound from the black boxes at a depth of 20,000 feet (6,096 meters). The French research vessel, the Pourquoi Pas, is ready to retrieve the black boxes if they are ever found.

Analyst of the Evidence

Autopsies that have been performed on the recovered bodies revealed multiple fractures on the passengers’ legs, hips, and arms. These fractures indicate that plane might have come apart in the air as opposed to breaking apart when it hit the water.
Large pieces of the plane that were recovered also suggest that a mid-air break up occurred.
The bodies that have been recovered are not burned, which suggests that there wasn’t an explosion . Although the bodies might provide clues, it’s unlikely that they will indicate the cause of the accident.
The remains of the crash that have been recovered out of the Atlantic were flown to the island of Fernando de Noronha, 400 miles away from the crash site. From there, the recovered remnants will be transported to the mainland town of Recife for further analysis. A French technician in Recife is analyzing the recovered evidence and will determine whether or not the debris will be taken to France or remain in Brazil for assessment.

When Will The Search End?

The search will continue at least until June 25. Officials have started meeting every other day to discuss when to officially end the search. The decision to end the search will depend on whether they’re still finding additional clues.
The waters are warm, around 82 degrees Fahrenheit (28 degrees Celsius), which means that bodies are more likely to float.

Continental Airlines Flight 61 Beoing 777-200 Plane Captain Dies in Mid-Flight

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 292px; height: 219px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_hORHP1CwmnU/Sjropn2_VJI/AAAAAAAACeI/FGKlZWDaVtA/s400/art.continental.pilot.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5348843309227791506" />
A Continental Airlines flight 61 landed at Newark International Airport this afternoon after its Captain Craig Lenell died this morning on June 18, 2009 while on board.

The 60-year-old Newark-based pilot, who worked for Continental for 32 years, is believed to have died of natural causes, said Kelly Cripe, a spokeswoman for the Houston-based airline.

A co-pilot and a relief pilot aboard safely landed the Boeing 777 aircraft at Newark, which was scheduled to be the plane's final destination, just before noon.

Carrying 247 passengers, Flight 61 departed from Brussels, Belgium at 9:45 this morning.

Passengers say that they were not informed about the pilot's death. "We were just told there was a major medical issue aboard the flight," said one passenger. "I wasn't scared at all. No fear, no panic, everybody was fine."

"No, we were not aware of that," said another. "They called the doctor in the middle of the flight. That was it. He was based out of Newark and had 32 years of service with the airline.

A cardiologist on board who responded to an announcement asking for doctors said he believes a heart attack killed the pilot. He said he and the crew tried to revive the pilot using a defibrillator, but there was "no chance at all" of saving him."

"When I came in, it was just too late," said Dr. Julien Struyven, a doctor on board that tended to the pilot. The autopsies have revealed fractures in the legs, hips, and arms.

The top French investigator has expressed optimism about figuring out what caused the Airbus A330-200 to crash into the Atlantic. He also called the conditions “one of the worst situations ever known in an accident investigation” because of the location and the deep waters.

Paul-Louis Arslanian, who is charge of the French air accident investigation agency BEA, told a news conference outside of Paris that they are beginning to form “an image that is progressively less fuzzy”.

“We are in a situation that is a bit more favorable than the first days,” Arslanian said. “We can say there is a little less uncertainty, so there is a little more optimism. … (but) it is premature for the time being to say what happened.”

A spokesperson for Brazilian medical examiners, who wanted to remain anonymous due to department rules, told the Associated Press that fractures were found in autopsies on an undisclosed number out of the 50 bodies that were recovered.

Frank Ciacco, a former forensic expert at the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board said that typically, intact bodies with multiple fractures is a good indicator of a mid flight break up, especially if you’re seeing large pieces of aircraft as well.

The news of the autopsie results were first reported on Wednesday by Brazil’s O Estado de S. Paulo newspaper. The paper also reported that some of the victims were found with little or no clothing, and had no signs of burns.

Jack Casey, and aviation safety consultant in Washington D.C. said that the lack of clothing could be significant. He said “In an in-air break up like we are supposing here, the clothes are just torn away”. Casey also agreed that multiple fractures were consistent with a midair breakup of the plane, which was cruising at an altitude of 34,500 feet when it went down.

“Getting ejected into that kind of windstream is like hitting a brick wall — even if they stay in their seats, it is a crushing effect,” Casey said. “Most of them were long dead before they hit the water would be my guess.”

“When you’ve had impact in the water, there is a lot more fragmentation of the bodies. They hit the water with a higher force.” , said Cassie, unlike when a plane crashes into water mostly intact. When a planes crashes into the water mostly intact, debris and bodies are generally broken into small pieces.

For now, the search continues for the flight data and voice recorders, the one missing piece that can give investigators a solid idea as to what happened on that chilling night. At the moment, French-charted ships are actively searching an area with a radius of 50 miles (80 kilometers), all while pulling underwater listening devices that are attached to 19,700 feet (6,800 meters) of cable.

The black boxes are designed to send out an electronic tapping sound that can be heard up to 1.25 miles (2 kilometers) away. The locator beacons on the black box will begin to fade after 30 days, which means that there’s only 2 weeks left to find the device.

Jetstar Airbus A330-200 Makes Emergency Landing

An Australian Jetstar Airbus 330-200 aircraft with 203 passengers and crew made an emergency landing on the island of Guam on Thursday after a cockpit fire broke out as the aircraft flew over the Pacific Ocean.

The Airbus A330-200 aircraft was flying from Japan to Australia late on Wednesday night when, four hours into the flight, smoke was seen in the cockpit and the right-hand cockpit window area caught fire. It flew into thunderstorms and disappeared over the Atlantic Ocean.
It is believed to have hit severe turbulence near the equator and at the altitude it was flying, it's possible that the Air France plane flew directly into the most charged part of the storm — the top.
The plane indicated it was flying normally more than three hours later as it left Brazil radar contact, beyond the Fernando de Noronha archipelago, at 10:48 local time. It was flying at 35,000 feet and traveling at 522 mph. Signal indicated electrical problems about a half-hour later, the plane "crossed through a thunderous zone with strong turbulence. It sent an automatic message 14 minutes later reporting electrical failure and a loss of cabin pressure.
The area where the plane could have gone down was vast, in the middle of very deep Atlantic Ocean waters between Brazil and the coast of Africa.
It is the deadliest commercial airline disaster since 2001, and it is the first major accident with the Airbus A330 aircraft.
The two biggest groups of nationalities aboard were Brazilian and French, with 58 and 61 people aboard, respectively. Among the other passengers on the flight were two Americans, five British, 26 Germans and nine Chinese. Air France Flight 447, a four-year-old Airbus A330, left Rio on Sunday night with 216 passengers and 12 crew members on board.
Air France officials says "it is possible" the plane was hit by lightning, but how a lightning can bring the plane down? Search and rescue attempts continue across a wide stretch of the Atlantic Ocean.
<img width='1' height='1' device survived the blaze.

Investigators are also obtaining recordings of conversations between controllers in the tower and the jet's two-person crew, said National Transportation Safety Board spokeswoman Debbie Hersman.

"Air traffic controllers did observe sparks from the aircraft as it was going down the runway and immediately alerted fire-rescue crews at the airport," Hersman said Saturday evening in West Columbia.

The National Transportation Safety Board has sent team to West Columbia to investigate the crash.

The Learjet 60 crashed on takeoff at 11:53 p.m. Friday.

Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen said the twin-engine private jet was cleared for takeoff on a flight to Van Nuys, California, and began its takeoff roll a few minutes before midnight.

Air traffic controllers "saw sparks coming from the runway -- whether that was from the aircraft or its engines, we don't know," Bergen said Saturday.

"They overran the end of runway 11. They impacted the antenna array and a number of lights at the end of the runway. They went through the perimeter fence and across the roadway here," Hersman said Saturday. "There was a significant post-crash fire."

The crash closed the airport, which is Columbia's main commercial and passenger terminal.

Hersman said the airport would not reopen until investigators finished collecting debris from the runway and crash site.

"Investigators would look at every aspect of the crash, from the pilots' schedules to the aircraft's condition. It was a fairly new airplane, manufactured in 2006 and certified to operate in 2007." Heathrow Airport in January 2008, investigators said.

Investigators from the Air Accident Investigations Branch (AAIB) said that water, which is normally present in aircraft fuel, may have frozen because of unusually cold weather on a flight from Beijing to London on Jan. 17.

"Although the exact mechanism in which the ice has caused the restriction is still unknown in detail, it has been proven that ice could cause a restriction in the fuel feed system," the report said.

"The risk of recurrence needs to be addressed in the
